Mountain Biking the Moerangi Trail

Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park

This mountain bike trail is remote and challenging, and at a grade 4 it’s not for the faint hearted. You can complete this 35 km trail within 6 to 8 hours depending on your experience and fitness level, or decide to do an overnight trip and stay at one of the historic huts along the way and take in the ancient native forest and rare native birdlife.

Drop off is approximately 45 minutes drive from Whirinaki Adventures, and pick up takes 20 minutes, so make sure you plan your day with this in mind.

Here’s a few things to remember before you plan your trip.

  • Take sufficient food and water
  • First Aid kit
  • Spare parts/tool kit
  • Warm clothes
  • Always check the weather forecast

We have a personal locator beacon (PLB) for hire for a little peace of mind – $20 per one day, then $10 per day thereafter.

Don’t forget you can stay with us as well. We can accommodate up to 18 guests in our three fully self-contained lodges. All of our lodges have fully equipped kitchen and dining areas, or we can provide the meals for you.

There is plenty of outdoor space for tents and campervans, although pre-booking is a must for these services.
